Right now it is critically important that Iowa officials hear just how concerned Iowans are about the prospect of a 660 megawatt coal plant at Marshalltown and a 750 MW plant at Waterloo, in addition to the 790MW plant that just fired up this summer in Council Bluffs. Coal-fired power plants are the largest industrial source of global warming pollution. Plains Justice has filed expert testimony about why even modern coal technology is not clean, and how we can do better economically and environmentally with efficiency and truly clean energy. To tell the Iowa Utilities Board, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Governor Culver that enough is enough, use the addresses below. Plains Justice maintains an archive of resources of information for the benefit of all the communities and organizations we serve. However, the documents are primarily intended for internal use by Plains Justice, and as such, are only minimally categorized. Included in the archive are the following:

  • Iowa Coal Combustion Waste Report 2007
  • Our Marshalltown Coal Plant page includes the petition and expert testimony filed by Plains Justice on behalf of a coalition of five Iowa organizations opposed to Alliant Energy’s proposal for a new 660MW coal plant at Marshalltown, Iowa. Also posted are agency filings by Alliant and the Iowa Department of Justice Office of the Consumer Advocate, which opposes the plant.
  • The Green Hat Archive, a series of peer-reviewed scientific articles and reports on the effects of fossil fuel combustion on agricultural yields.
  • Our Waterloo Coal Plant page includes all public filings by LS Power/Elk Run Associates/Dynergy for the Elk Run Energy, a 750MW coal-fired power plant proposed to be built in Waterloo, Iowa.
  • Information about the Council Bluffs Energy Center
  • Greening your office. This memo explains what it means to “go green”, offers suggestions to help businesses do so, and provides rationales to help advocate and justify such a decision.
